Live Scan is a digital fingerprinting process that transmits your prints electronically to the California DOJ (and the FBI when required) for a background check. Most visits take about 10–15 minutes.
Your employer, licensing board, or requesting agency provides the Request for Live Scan Service form (often BCIA 8016). This form tells the DOJ where to send your results and which fees apply.
📌 We can’t process a Live Scan without the required form.
Bring one current, government-issued photo ID (example: driver’s license, state ID, or passport). We verify your identity and confirm the information on your form before scanning.
📌 Make sure your name and date of birth match your ID.
A certified operator captures your fingerprints electronically using a Live Scan device. If a print needs improvement, we’ll re-scan it on the spot for quality.
📌 No ink is used for Live Scan digital submissions.
Your fingerprints are transmitted securely to the California DOJ and/or FBI based on your form. Results are sent to the requesting agency (not to the Live Scan provider).
📌 Processing time depends on the agency and DOJ workload.
After your fingerprints are submitted, you’ll receive an ATI (Applicant Tracking Identifier). Save it — it’s your receipt number and is used to check status or reference your submission.
Electronic Live Scan submissions are typically completed within California. If you’re outside CA, you may need an ink fingerprint card (FD-258) submission depending on the requesting agency.
If you’re unsure which Live Scan form you need, contact your requesting agency. We can help confirm the form is complete, but we can’t decide which form you should use.
Live Scan pricing is typically made up of (1) our rolling fee and (2) government/agency fees. Government fees vary by application type and your BCIA 8016 form.
